A New Role for Modern Grandparents:

Stewards For Future Generations

Over the past, now almost forty years, I  have been attempting to identify and define specific roles that grandparents play for their grandchildren, their own children, and society in general in "The Grandparent Guide" I listed and explained each unique role of:

  1. Living Ancestor

  2. Family Historian

  3. Mentor

  4. Nurturer

  5. Spiritual Guide

  6. Wizard

  7. Hero

  8. Student

  9. Teacher

  10. Buddy

  11. Role Model

Now, considering the state of our world, both environmentally, culturally and philosophically , it is more imperative than ever that grandparents learn how to apply their wisdom, experience and life perspective...what I call "Grandparent Power"... to change the world for the better. This is what "Grand" stewardship means. Elders dedicating them selves in a selfless manner, to make the world a better place for all who come after.

As I continue to address this issue, and to create an agenda for grandparent action,  I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Question:
What does stewardship mean to you,  and what are the most important issues that you feel need attention?
Please e-mail your comments to  gpfound@grandparenting.org.

Thank you.

One grandmother's answer:

Stewardship is personal responsibility for taking care of someone or something we do not own. Assisting with a “servant’s heart” in every area needed. Teaching your children, as they learn and grow as a parent, encouraging them when times are rough, providing relief when they need a break from parenting. Being a role model for your children and your grandchildren and telling those old-old stories which will help connect your children to the past family roots as well as your grandchildren to the continued roots. Provide unconditional love even when it is tough.
